The Regional Centre for Strategic Studies (RCSS) held the Shelton Kodikara Memorial Oration at the BMICH in Colombo on the 6th of August, 2019. The symbiotic relationship between science and politics was traced by Prof. Veranja Karunaratne,Vice Chancellor of SLINTEC Academy and Senior Professor of Chemistry at the University of Peradeniya, who delivered the 2019 Kodikara Memorial Oration.
The title of the Oration was “World Affairs in Post-Modern Diplomacy: Science and Politics”.
Prof. Karunaratne brought to light the evolution of international diplomacy and the role of science and technology during the course of its development. He explored key thematic areas from the development of Atomic Weapons, Information Technology, Science Diplomacy, Climate Change and Disruptive Technologies. He illustrated how science is politics and, how politics makes science and technology a decisive factor in global and local governance.
It underscored the importance of new thinking and ideas to reflect on national, regional and international politics and how science and technology can change future pathways.
The Kodikara Memorial Oration was established by RCSS in 2015, to honour Professor Shelton Upatissa Kodikara, the pioneer of the systematic study of IR in Sri Lanka.
