On 6th of August 2019, The Regional Centre for Strategic Studies (RCSS) held the Shelton Kodikara Memorial Oration at the BMICH in Colombo. The Kodikara Memorial Oration was established by RCSS in 2015, to honour Professor Shelton Upatissa Kodikara, the pioneer of the systematic study of IR in Sri Lanka.
The Keynote Speech at the 2019 Oration was delivered by Prof. Veranja Karunaratne, Vice Chancellor of SLINTEC Academy and Senior Professor of Chemistry at the University of Peradeniya. The focus of the speech was on “World Affairs in Post-Modern Diplomacy: Science and Politics”. During the lecture, Prof. Karunaratne brought to light the evolution of international diplomacy and the role of science and technology during the course of its development. He explored key thematic areas from the development of Atomic Weapons, Information Technology, Science Diplomacy, Climate Change and Disruptive Technologies. He illustrated how science is politics and, how politics makes science and technology a decisive factor in global and local governance.
The event concluded sparking new knowledge and ideas to rethink the national, international and regional politics and how science and technology can change future pathways.
